PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diesel engine for automatically performing priming work required when restarting an engine after fuel deficiency. SOLUTION: This diesel engine has a high pressure pump 5 driven by the engine E, and supplying fuel in a fuel tank 2 to a common rail 3, an electric priming pump 13 arranged in a fuel passage 15 extending to the high pressure pump 5 from the fuel tank 2, and a control device 10 for controlling the electric priming pump 13. The control device 10 drives the electric priming pump 13, when a first preset period T1 or more is continued in a state of being higher than a first preset engine speed N1 in an engine speed Ne, and being lower than first preset pressure C1 in common rail pressure Cp, when staring the engine.
