The present invention relates to recombinant nucleic acid molecules encoding recombinant HIV-1 subclass D envelope gp140 glycoproteins and to the glycoproteins encoded by same. The invention also relates to vectors comprising the nucleic acid molecules and vaccine compositions comprising the nucleic acid molecules or the glycoproteins. The invention discloses a method for inducing a broad immunogenic response to HIV-1 for the neutralization of HIV-1 virus.
