<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery excellent in properties such as discharge capacity and Coulomb efficiency, to provide a negative electrode material for the secondary battery, and to provide a carbon material suitable for the negative electrode material. <P>SOLUTION: The subject method for producing a carbon material for a battery electrode comprises: a stage where natural graphite grains in which the average grain size is controlled to 0.1 to 100 μm is subjected to immersing treatment with a hydrogen fluoride-containing solution; and a stage where heat treatment is performed at 2,400 to 3,300°C, and in which the total content of elements other than carbon is controlled to ≤800 ppm. Thus, the negative electrode material large in discharge capacity and excellent in Coulomb efficiency, and a secondary battery using the negative electrode material can be obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
