[Also in Division F4] A motor vehicle has a first pair of fixed head lamps and a second pair of pivoted headlamps which are connected to the steering mechanism in such a way that the lamp on the inside of a given turn is caused to pivot through a larger angle than the lamp on the outside of the turn. As the turn becomes sharper the angle between the pivoted headlamps increases and their rate of pivoting decreases. In one embodiment, each pivoted lamp has a rearwardly inclined pivot-pin 18 biased in one angular direction by a spring 19 and carrying a pulley 17 around which is wound a cable 16 connected to a rod 11 pivotally linked by a further rod 13 to a plate 10 fixed to a steering lever 8. When, as shown in Fig. 7, the lever 8 is rotated in a clockwise direction about its pivot 9, the rod 13 bears against a stop 15 and the rod 11 is moved by the pivot 12. During anticlockwise rotation, however, the rod 13 leaves the stop 15 and the rods 11, 13 are moved by the pivot 14 which is nearer than the pivot 12 to the pivot 9. In a modification, the pulley 17 is replaced by a cam (20, Fig. 9, not shown), and the cable (16) is connected directly to the plate (10). In a further modification (Figs. 10-12, not shown), an arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 7 is mounted on the pivot-pin 18. |
