PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a groove tracing type welding apparatus, which employs a highly versatile image-processing without limiting the kind of grooves to be traced, by detecting a groove from an image of a groove region, which is prior to a welding torch, through an image-processing without using a beam cutting line of a laser slit beam and by controlling the moving line of the welding torch based on the detected result. SOLUTION: The groove tracing type welding apparatus 10 is provided with: a welding torch 20; an image acquisition means 30 for obtaining an image 100 of a groove prior to the welding torch (hereinafter referred to as a preceding groove region); a shielding means 40 shielding the welding torch against the preceding groove region; a laterally driving means 50 supporting integrally the image acquisition means and the shielding means, and besides laterally moving them; and a controlling means 60 controlling the groove 80 and the welding torch so that their lateral positions coincide therewith.
