Seal breaking apparatus for ( particularly, sliding ) doors and windows is incorporated into latch housing (110) on stile (102) of the moving sash. Pivoting of handle (106) turns actuator (110) driving pin (115) downward in slot (116) and releasing hooked catch (107) of moving sash (102) form striker (104) of fixed frame. Continued pivoting of handle (106) brings lever (111) to bear on cam (114), also mounted to the fixed frame thereby overcoming frictional or suction in the sash sealing arrangement which would otherwise make it difficult to open the window.
