PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thermal development method and a thermal development apparatus capable of even thermal development of both surfaces, and to prevent a color tone shift and a density variation. SOLUTION: In the thermal development method for generating an image from a latent image recorded on an image formation layer of a photosensitive thermal developable recording material A, by means of heating the photosensitive thermal developable recording material A, a first surface, which is one surface of the photosensitive thermal developable recording material A, and a second surface, which is the remaining surface of the same, are simultaneously heated; and a total amount of heat applied to the second surface is controlled so as to fall within a range of 100±30 when a total amount of heat applied to the first surface is taken as 100 in connection with the respective total amounts of heat which are applied to the image formation layer from the first and second surfaces and equal to or higher than the development reaction temperature.
