PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording material which is applicable to a high-density optical recording medium, a three-dimensional display, a holographic optical element, etc., and can make high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, good preservable property and dry processing compatible with each other, and a hologram recording method. SOLUTION: The hologram recording method records interference fringes as refractive index modulation with a system with which rewriting is not possible by inducing an orientation change of a compound having intrinsic double refractive indices by hologram exposure in a photorefractive material containing the compound having the double refractive indices and immobilizing the orientation change by chemical reaction as it is. The hologram recording material of the non-rewritable system which has at least a low molecular liquid crystalline compound having a polymerizable group, a photoconductive material and a polymerization initiator is provided as the hologram recording material with which the hologram recording method is possible.
