PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately discriminate the dot area in an original manuscript. SOLUTION: A pixel for discriminating the dot (a discriminating pixel) which shows the extreme value of the density (a density peak or a density dip) in the prescribed region of the image of the original manuscript, is detected by a pixel detector 111 for detecting the discriminating pixel. An inspection region is successively set on the prescribed region so that each discriminating pixel detected by the pixel detector 111 for detecting the discriminating pixel is located at the reference position of the inspection region. A two-dimensional histogram (a vector histogram) shows the occurrence frequency of the other discriminating pixel to the discriminating pixel at the reference position on the inspection region, and is created by a histogram creating part 111. The distance between the discriminating pixel located at the shortest distance from the reference position and the reference position, and the occurrence frequency of the discriminating pixel are specified by using the two-dimensional histogram. The dot area in the prescribed region is discriminated by a dot discriminating part 102 on the basis of the specified distance and occurrence frequency. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
