PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat development apparatus and method capable of miniaturization and capable of inexpensively achieving heat development of a heat-developable recording material with recording layers formed on both sides. SOLUTION: In the heat development apparatus for heat-developing a sheetlike heat-developable recording material 71, a terminal end of a heating region by a heating unit 79 is provided with an inversion processing mechanism 110 for inverting the heat-developable recording material 71 and returning it to a beginning end of the heating region by the heating unit 79; and a transportation route switching unit 120 for selectively switching a route of the heat-developable recording material 71 to a side of the inversion processing mechanism 110 or a discharge-side transportation route 130, so that good heat development of recording layers on both sides of the heat-developable recording material 71 is performed.
