PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a confocal microscope that can excite a sample labeled with fluorescent protein to thereby generate fluorescent polarization and perform various functional analysis of the sample by using the generated fluorescent polarization. SOLUTION: The confocal microscope comprises: a laser beam source 1 emitting a polarized laser beam; a scanning optical unit 4 deflecting and scanning the laser beam; an objective lens 8 irradiating the sample 10 with the deflected and scanned laser beam as an excitation beam; a dichroic mirror 3 detecting a necessary wavelength band from a polarized fluorescence emitted from the sample 10 which is excited by the polarized beam; a polarizing plate 11 extracting a fluorescence with a predetermined polarization property from the fluorescence detected with the dichroic mirror 3; a barrier filter 12 selecting a wavelength of the extracted fluorescence; and a photomultiplier 15 detecting the fluorescence selected by the barrier filter.
