PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ornament which can retain a superior hardness and aesthetic appearance for a long period of time, and to provide a surface treatment method for providing the ornament. SOLUTION: The surface treatment method used for the ornament comprises: a step (2b) of hardening at least one part (2a) of a substrate 2 through nitriding treatment or carburization treatment; and a step (2c) of forming an underlayer 40 on at least one part of the hardened substrate 2; and a step (2d) of forming a coating 30 on at least one part of the underlayer 40 with an ion plating method. The underlayer 40 is composed of Ti, Cr or an alloy containing at least one of them. The coating 30 is composed of a material containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of TiN, TiC, TiCN, TiO, CrN, CrC, CrCN and CrO. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
