A longitudinally movable frame (10) is carried on the roof (1) of the firefighting vehicle (2). A guide mechanism (25) with a swing lever (27) and a damping cylinder (26) is attached to the front end of the frame. The frame has rollers which may hold a ladder. A rack-and- pinion drive (21) is installed at the rear end of the roof. Electric motors drive pinions through a reduction gearing, and the pinions engage with racks fastened to the underside (18) of the frame. As the frame moves rearward, it tilts to swing its rear end (15) down toward ground level.
