<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress grain growth of Pt and to enhance durability in a catalyst in which a ceria-based carrier carries at least Pt. <P>SOLUTION: A carrier containing ceria carries a platinum complex to make a complex-carrying carrier. The complex-carrying carrier is heated in an atmosphere of lack of oxygen and the platinum complex is decomposed and carries metal platinum. The Pt complex becomes metal Pt without producing Pt oxide by decomposing the complex-carrying carrier in the atmosphere of lack of oxygen. Accordingly, the produced metal Pt is outstandingly fine and a particle diameter is uniform.
