PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a manufacturing cost resulting from a spacer, and to prevent the spacer from falling down by the flow of convection in a joining furnace before a discharge vessel is joined. SOLUTION: In this method for manufacturing a flat discharge lamp, in which the discharge vessel has a bottom plate 6, a frame body 7, a lid body 9 and at least one spacer 3 disposed between the bottom plate 6 and the lid body 9, and a discharge medium is filled, a wax bath comprising wax paste is prepared, one end of at least one spacer 3 is dipped in the wax bath, and at least one spacer 3 having the dipped end part is mounted onto the inner side of the bottom plate 6 so that at least one spacer 3 adheres to the inner side of the bottom plate 6 by the wax paste 5 in the wax bath.
