PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a heat development method and a heat development apparatus capable of evenly heating both surfaces of a recording material even if heating units for heating the front and rear side surfaces of the recording material are different from each other in contact area or heat conductivity. SOLUTION: In the heat development method for generating an image from a latent image by heating a photosensitive heat developable recording material A with the latent image recorded on an image formation layer from both front and rear surfaces thereof, in case where a first surface 33a, which is one surface of the photosensitive heat developable recording material A, and a second surface 33b, which is the remaining surface of the same, are heated by respective heating units having different contact areas and comprising the same material, an amount of heat applied to a surface on a side with a larger contact area is controlled so as to fall to≤80 when an amount of heat applied to a surface on a side with a smaller contact area is taken as 100 in connection with the respective amounts of heat applied to the first surface 33a and the second surface 33b, in terms of the ratio in integrated value between temperature above the development reaction temperature of the photosensitive heat developable material and lapsed time after attainment to above the development reaction temperature.
