In appanatus for the distillation of liquids, suitable for the desalination of water, wherein a film of distilland flows on one surface of a microporous membrane while a film of distillate flows, countercurrent to the distilland, on the opposite surface of the microporous membrane, the distilland film being heated and the distillate film being cooled so that vapour diffuses from the distilland film through the microporous membrane and condenses in the distillate film, part of the distillate stream removed from the distillation zone is recirculated to the distillate inlet of the distillation zone. By virtue of this arrangement, both the product and effluent liquids are substantially at the temperature of the feed liquid. The apparatus shown comprises a stack of microporous membranes 10 alternating with impermeable heat-conductive membranes 12 to form a plurality of shallow channels, the stack being secured between a heat-source 14 and a heat-sink 16. Distilland F, supplied through a manifold at one side of the stack, flows through alternate channels. Recirculated distillate RP, supplied through a manifold at the opposite side of the stack, flows through the other channels, countercurrent to the distilland. The arrangement is such that multipleeffect distillation takes place. The recirculated distillate is introduced into each stage at a rate approximating the rate of discharge of effluent distilland from that stage. The desired product (e.g. desalinated water) is withdrawn from the system at P. The effluent distilland (brine) is discharged from the system at E. The liquid to be distilled may be used as cooling medium in heat-sink 16.</p> |
