Disclosed is a gas sensor for detecting a gas component in an exhaust gas, comprising a first gas-sensitive semiconductor component that is configured as a resistor component and a second gas-sensitive semiconductor component. Also disclosed is a method for purifying an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine by means of a catalytic converter that is disposed in an exhaust pipe of the internal combustion engine, a gas sensor being used for controlling operation of said catalytic converter. The second gas-sensitive semiconductor component is configured as a field effect component. According to the inventive exhaust gas purification method, a gas-sensitive semiconductor component that is configured as a resistor component is used for detecting the nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas while a gas-sensitive semiconductor component of the gas sensor, which is configured as a field effect component, is used for detecting the excess air coefficient of the exhaust gas. The invention applies to motor vehicles comprising an internal combustion engine, particularly a nitrogen oxide storage catalytic converter for purifying the exhaust gas. |
