PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system wherein a television receiver displays a plurality of television programs and a viewer easily selects one of the programs to be able to view the selected program.

SOLUTION: A data processing apparatus of the television receiver receives television program schedule information for a plurality of television programs appearing on a plurality of television channels and stores the information into a memory. A user controller is, for example, a remote controller. A video display generator receives a video control command from the data processing apparatus and the program schedule information from the memory and overlays the information on a television program appearing on a television channel in at least one mode for television program guide operations to display a part of the program schedule information. The data processing apparatus controls the video display generator on the basis of the video control command generated in response to a user control command and tunes the television receiver to the selected television channel.
