PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode and/or an anode having a superior electrode characteristic wherein management corresponding to a water forming rate during the operation of a fuel cell and wherein battery performance can be maintained, and a solid polymer fuel cell which is provided with this and in which a high battery output can be obtained.

SOLUTION: In an electrode for a fuel cell having a catalyst layer composed of a catalyst carrying conductor and a polyelectrolyte, a water absorption/desorption body is further carried on the catalyst carrying conductor.
