<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal cell is accurately optically compensated and of which the layered structure is made thin. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has the liquid crystal cell whose liquid crystal molecules are aligned almost at right angles to a substrate in a non-driven state with no external electric field applied thereto and an optical anisotropic layer which is formed of a composition containing at least one kind of compound having optically negative refractive index anisotropy and represented by a general formulas (I), (II), and (III) (where R and R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>9</SP>are each substituents, etc., and X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>3</SP>are each bivalent linking groups, etc.) and is of ≤10 nm in Re to visible light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
