<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image compressing method for suppressing distortion caused by image compression. <P>SOLUTION: A contrast position detector operates a difference of signals that respective pixels of an image have between the adjacent pixels in respective differences 22 and 32. The difference operated in respective converters 23 and 33 is nonlinearly converted. Selectors 24 and 34 discriminate the difference at every number of pixel units on a compression processing on the basis of a pixel position. Integrators 25a to 25h and 35a to 35h correspond to the number of pixel units, store the difference discriminated in the selectors 24 and 34, and integrate the stored difference. Detectors 26 and 36 detect the maximum value of the stored differences, specify the integrators 25a to 25h and 35a to 35h storing the detected maximum difference and output a numeric value in the pixel unit, which corresponds to the specified one.
