PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which correctly determines the front and the rear of a film original even if it has no recording magnetic information. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus considers that a film original is "front", when a pulse number sent to an AF motor to move an original scanner to a focusing position falls within a predetermined number±1 pulses (a step S21 is decided as being affirmative). The image reading apparatus considers that the film original is "front", when a difference between the pulse number sent to the AF motor and the predetermined number corresponds to the thicknessΔt of the film original (a step S23 is decided as being affirmative). When considered to be the "back", the main scanning direction is set to the direction of an initial value, and a sub-scanning direction is set to a direction opposite to the initial value (step S25). Thus, even if the film original is not reset, the scanning image of a right image similar to the case that the front or back of the film original is set correctly can be obtained.
