PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, in which dust, e.g. paper powder, falling onto a paper guide from a document under carriage will not intrude into the paper guide nor fall on the paper guide, and the dust can be removed easily. SOLUTION: In a copy/facsimile multifunction machine 1, where a document on a document tray 2 is fed onto a carrying passage 3 by means of a sheet feed roller 5 disposed in the vicinity of inlet of the lateral U-shaped carrying passage 3, carried to read positions P1 and P2 by means of a carrying roller 6 in order to read out an image, and then discharged to a sheet discharge tray 4 by means of a sheet discharge roller 7 disposed in the vicinity of outlet of the carrying passage 3, a groove 312 is formed in the upper guide face 310 of a paper guide 30 constituting the inner guide face of the carrying passage 3 in a direction perpendicular to the carrying direction, and the carrying roller 6 is contained in that groove 312.
