ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of pseudo-synchronization or synchronization pull-out caused by the erroneous detection of a synchronizing code in an encoding apparatus.

SOLUTION: The encoding apparatus has a multiplexer 111 for generating a multiplexed code string 201 by multiplexing a plurality of kinds of variable length codes obtained by compression-encoding an input image signal, for each of a plurality of layers; and an output encoding apparatus 200 for assembling an output code string 205 by receiving the multiplexed code string 201. The output encoding apparatus 200 inserts the synchronizing code into the output code string 205 at any one of a plurality of synchronizing code inserting positions periodically predetermined in the same according to a synchronizing code insertion request signal 203.
