ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of pseudo synchronism or out-of-synchronism caused by the erroneous detection of a synchronizing code in an encoding apparatus.

SOLUTION: The encoding apparatus has a multiplexer 111 for generating a multiplexed code string 201 by multiplexing a plurality of kinds of variable length codes obtained by compression-encoding an input image signal, and an output encoding apparatus 200 for assembling an output code string 205 by receiving the multiplexed code stream 201. The output encoding apparatus 200 inserts the synchronizing code into the output code string 205 at any one of a plurality of synchronizing code inserting positions periodically predetermined in the same according to a synchronizing code insertion request signal 203, and inserts a stuffing bit having an initial of a first value and the subsequent bit of a second bit if the bit follows the first bit into the output code string 205.
