An apparatus for fastening a thermoplastics button to a fabric by heating the button includes a rod for deforming the heat softened shank of the button. An operating arm 10 pivotally mounted in a base 1 has a pin 9 projecting from a portion 3 sliding along the arm to an extended position in which when the arm is lowered it passes through an opening 4<SP>1</SP> in a spring clamping plate 4 and pierces a hole in the fabric clamped beneath it. A crank engaging in a slot in the hub of the arm 10 simultaneously winds up a prime mover 13 when the arm is raised. When the arm is lowered with the portion 3 retracted the pin 9 engages in an opening 9<SP>1</SP> in the base and the shank of a button clamped by a plate 15 in the portion 3 passes though the opening in the plate 4 and in the fabric and is heated by a unit 6 in the base 1. The unit is acuated by lowering the portion 3, which carries a dog which rotates a lever which trips the prime mover 13 which rotates a lever 12 which closes the switch for the heater unit. The lever then pivots an arm 11 which raises a rod 8 passing through the heater unit to rivet the heated shank to the fabric. |
