PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk device where the capacity of a data area can be increased by reducing the length of a synchronous area in a split sector. SOLUTION: When there is a servo area in a sector, the magnetic disk device carries out recording by splitting the sector into a first split sector and a second split sector each of which is composed of the synchronous area and the data area. The magnetic disk device is provided with a recording medium 9, a head 5, a mechanism for controlling positions of the recording medium 9 and the head 5, an HDC 20 for controlling writing timing and reading timing, and an RDC 30 which performs writing by modulating the synchronous area and the data area according to the writing timing, performs phase synchronization and frequency synchronization based on the synchronous area read according to the reading timing, and demodulates the data area according to the obtained phase and a frequency.
