<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of correcting an inadequate scanning position on a photosensitive body by operating a lighting pattern of a semiconductor laser device. <P>SOLUTION: When correcting is not carried out, a scanning speed on the photosensitive body differs according to portions so that an image in which the end section of the image is extended and the central section is compressed, is formed. Areas are defined on the photosensitive body according to the scanning speed. The scanning speed is primarily decreased as it approaches the center of the photosensitive body and is increased as it approaches the end section. Therefore, for example, an effective area of an image is divided into five blocks as is shown in Fig., the scanning is controlled by inserting no pixel piece in both of the end sections, inserting one pixel piece by each pixel in both of inner areas adjacent to the end sections and inserting two pixel pieces by each pixel in the central section.
