PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device capable of providing color reproducibility optimum to respective video sources by the correction of a color purity conversion filter and a gamma table. SOLUTION: In the projection type picture display device, a light beam emitted from a light source is separated into three color light beams red, green and blue by light separation means (dichroic mirrors) 6 and 10, and the color light beams are made incident on liquid crystal panels 9, 11 and 17, respectively and optically modulated, then the modulated color light beams are composited to one image by a light compositing means (dichroic prism) 18, and the image is projected to a screen by a projection lens 19. A plurality of color purity conversion filter 20 having different wavelength characteristic are disposed so as to be switchable in at least one optical path out of a plurality of optical paths between the light source and the projection lens, and the filter is switched to characteristic corresponding to the content of a video source.
