[Also in Division A5] Magnesium phosphide is produced by reacting magnesium and red phosphorus in the presence of at least one non-toxic de-sensitizing substance capable of taking up part of the heat of reaction by physical or chemical change, thus avoiding an explosive reaction. The substance is a solid material or a liquid hydrocarbon adsorbed on to a solid material. The solid material may be a very finely ground voluminous powder, having a bulk weight below 350, preferably 200, gms. per litre, of an alkaline earth metal oxide or carbonate, or metal soap; magnesium oxide, carbonate and stearate and calcium stearate are especially preferred powders. The solid material may also be a solid hydrocarbon, preferably saturated, e.g. paraffin wax. The liquid hydrocarbon adsorbed into solid may be paraffin oil mixed with an alkaline earth metal oxide or carbonate or a metal stearate powder having a bulk weight below 350 gms./litre. A non-toxic inorganic solid having a m.pt. below 1000‹ C., especially dried calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or aluminium chloride or sodium chloride and carbonate or potassium chloride or carbonate, may also be used in the process. 6-60% by weight based on the entire mixture is the most favourable amount of non- toxic additive. The product contains between 60-80% magnesium phosphide.</p>
