PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating a coke oven by which the tar attached to an oven lid member such as a throat frame and a flange member having a knife edge cross section shape, and a member at the vicinity of the oven lid can be completely eliminated without using an electric heater and a cleaner device. SOLUTION: The operation method comprises installing a gas-flowing heat-resistant box 13 having an inlet through which a gas generated in the oven is introduced, at a carbonization oven side of a freely openable oven lid structure 2 for closing a doorway 4 of the carbonization oven 1 through which coal particles 3 are charged, and blowing air in an amount required for burning the tar into the gas-flowing heat-resistant box 13 after starting the carbonization and after reaching to a condition in which the interior of the gas-flowing heat-resistant box 13 is a sucked pressure and the temperature is the burning and decomposing temperature of the generated tar when carbonizing the coal particles 3.
