PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonizing apparatus for wood, or the like, having higher treatment efficiency than conventional ones. SOLUTION: This carbonizing apparatus includes a pyrolyzing zone 1 where wood, or the like, is pyrolyzed and a cooling zone 2 under the pyrolyzing zone 1. The apparatus has the following mechanism: On pyrolyzing the wood, or the like, fed in the zone 1, the pyrolyzed wood or the like descends in its own weight into the cooling zone 2 and cooled. In this apparatus, because of the mechanism described above, there is no need of dividing into either pyrolyzing step or cooling step as the case in a batch system, and the pyrolyzing step and the cooling step can proceed simultaneously in the respective zones.
