PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new chiral agent useful for exhibiting an Sc* phase. SOLUTION: A compound is represented by general formula (I) (wherein, Ar<SP>1</SP>and Ar<SP>2</SP>denote each independently an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group; L<SP>1</SP>denotes a single bond or a bivalent linking group; the plurality of existing Ar<SP>1</SP>, Ar<SP>2</SP>and L<SP>1</SP>may each be the same or different; and all the substituents may each have a substituent).
