PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a packaging machine which copes with two kinds of bags, gusset bags and flat bags, with a single unit of machine. SOLUTION: A pair of grips 25 which grip a bag fed by a bag receiving/transferring means 10 linked to a bag feeding means 5 grip the vertical right and left edges b and c, front and rear, of the gusset bag (a) by the use of a first sandwiching part g<SB>1</SB>and a second sandwiching part g<SB>2</SB>. The means 10 grips the vertical edges of both sides of the flat bag h by the use of the first sandwiching part g<SB>1</SB>. A folding means 50 folds the parts d of both the sides of the gusset bag (a) by inwardly moving the leading end of the perpendicularly erected vertical rod 60a of a folding rod 60. At the same time as forming the folds, the folding means 50 raises a main shaft 51 located in a lower position to its original position, thereby removing an obstacle to transferring the bag a. In the case of the flat bag h, the folding means 50 changes the vertical rod 60a of the folding rod 60 to a horizontal position in advance to avoid interference with the flat bag h passing through.
