PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which provides in high brightness the emitted light components of three colors, red, green, and blue, which are well balanced and suitable for a full-color display. SOLUTION: Between a positive electrode 3 and a negative electrode 5, a red light emitting layer 11, a green light emitting layer 12, and a blue light emitting layer 13 in this order are laminated, and an intermediate layer 'a' composed of an organic material is provided between the green light emitting layer 12 and the blue light emitting layer 13. The energy gap between HOMO-LUMO of the intermediate layer 'a' is larger than that of a blue light emitting material composing the blue light emitting layer 12. The intermediate layer 'a' has a positive hole transportability. When a display is constructed by using the organic EL element 1, a color filter is installed on the light taking-out side.
