A commercial off-the-shelf single-chip micro-controller (200) is controlled so that, without using external logical components, an autonomous communications controller (213) can be built up for a time-controlled fault-tolerant communications system (100,110,111) to undertake the transmission and receipt of messages and make a global time available. An independent claim is also included for a device for time-controlled communication in a distributed computer system.
