Cross-linked non-proliferous copolymers comprise in polymerized form an acrylic acid ester cross-linked by 2 to 20% by weight of a cross-linking agent which is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon containing two or more allyl or substituted allyl groups, which are defined as having the formula <FORM:1113149/C3/1> where the remaining valencies of the carbon atoms are satisfied by hydrogen, alkyl or other organic radicals. The copolymers are obtained by copolymerising the monomers in the presence of a catalyst at 20 to 100 DEG C. An additional cross-linking agent such as divinyl benzene, trivinyl benzene or divinyl naphthalene may also be included, as may such comonomers as styrene, ethyl styrene or an ester of vinyl alcohol. Cation or anion exchangers may be obtained by hydrolysing or aminolysing the copolymers. Specified "llyl" comonomers are hexa - 1,5 - diene, 2 - methyl - , 2,5 - dimethyl -, 3,4 - diethyl -, and 2 - methyl - 5 - isopropyl - hexa - 1,5 - diene, hepta - 1,6 - diene, nona - 1,8 - diene, 1,2,4 - trivinylcyclohexane, 1,3 - divinylcyclohexane and 1,3 - divinyl cyclopentane. The Examples describe the preparation of bead polymers by polymerizing in the presence of diebenzyl peroxide, methyl cellulose, and water, optionally with white spirit or isooctane in addition and also bulk polymerizations in the presence of dibenzoyl peroxide, the resulting copolymers being hydrolysed with aqueous soda lye or aminolysed with N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propylene diamine. |
