Selective keyboard illumination

A mobile device having a keyboard that is selectively illuminated to indicate an active portion is disclosed. The active portion of a key, a set of keys, or the entire keyboard is illuminated, or optionally illuminated using different illumination intensity or color, to indicate the active input mode. This provides an indication of the keyboard input mode without relying upon an onscreen or other indicator. <IMAGE>
