An apparatus and a method for correcting a gamma of a video display device are provided to realize optimal gamma correction regardless of linear and curved intervals of a gamma curve. A video display processor(21) displays a video signal on a screen. An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) processor(22) performs gamma correction of the video signal applied from the video display processor by using gamma correction data inputted from the outside. A memory part(24) stores an RGB(Red,Green,Blue) lookup table for the gamma correction. A contrast measurement part(11) measures contrast of an image displayed on an LCD(23). An adjustment part(12) compares a contrast value measured by the contrast measurement part with a set value and then varies the lookup table in the memory part based on difference between the values. A control part(25) calculates a variable of a curve function or a linear function that corresponds to an interval of a gamma correction by using a value obtained by dividing maximum contrast in equal parts and thereby completes the functions. The control part calculates gamma correction data of the whole intervals of a contrast level by using the functions.
