A method of setting a communication speed of a can communication node is provided to detect a transmission speed of a can communication node and set automatically the transmission speed by monitoring and utilizing a pulse change period of a can bus message frame during an initial communication speed setup period. A communication speed setup circuit is installed between a can transceiver and a can communication node. The can communication node controls the communication speed setup circuit in order to receive a can bus message frame for setting a communication speed during an initial communication speed setup period from the can transceiver(S1). A transmission speed of a can bus is obtained by monitoring a pulse change period of the can bus message frame(S2-S11). A test message is transmitted to the can transceiver through the can bus at the transmission speed and the transmission speed is set as the communication speed of the can communication node if an error is not generated in the transmitting process(S12-S14).
