A free piston rotary engine is provided to continuously perform compression, explosion, exhaust, and intake strokes, to execute four explosion strokes with one rotation of a rotor, to stably operate at high-speed rotation without vibration, and to reduce wear of operating parts. Semi-oval four pistons(7) are mounted in an oval cylinder. A square rotor(6) is installed in the piston at the same gradient as the piston. The piston is rotated along the oval of the cylinder to generate power by executing intake, compression, explosion, and exhaust strokes. When the fuel-air mixture is sucked through an intake port(1), the piston is rotated toward an engine body(2) to compress the fuel-air mixture. When the compressed gas reaches a spark plug(3), the gas is exploded. The rotor moves toward an exhaust port(4) by explosion and expansion. The piston reciprocates and slides together with the rotor by the oval cylinder.
