The application of a coating material on a substrate (10) comprises: (a) providing some particles of metal powder with a size in a range from that sufficient to avoid being swept from the substrate due to a layer of shock waves or shock front up to 50 microns; (b) forming a deposition layer (28) on at least one surface of the substrate by passing the particles of metal powder across a spray nozzle (20) at a speed sufficient to plastically deform the particles of metal powder on the surface. An Independent claim is also included for the manifold of a rocket engine having a deposit of copper containing material deposited on at least one surface by this method.
