An apparatus and a method for playing an optical disk are provided to minimize a read-in time by having at least two operations among a plurality of read-in operations performed in a read-in time period from an optical disk insertion to a completion of preparation of playing the optical disk. An apparatus for playing an optical disk comprises a driving portion(30), an optical pick-up(20) and a controller(60). The driving portion drives by rotating an optical disk(10). The optical pick-up detects a signal from the optical disk according to a control by the driving portion. The controller controls the driving portion and optical pick-up and makes a read-in operation for preparation of playing the optical disk to be performed before a rotation speed of the optical disk reaches a predetermined value.
