Novel hydroxybenzothioxanthene derivatives of the general formula wherein B is a benzene ring fused in the [a] or [c] position, X is a bromine or chlorine atom and each R is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl group, are prepared by reaction of a benzothioxanthenone derivative of the general formula with a Grignard reagent of the general formula hal.Mg.CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 .N(R) 2 , wherein hal is a halogen atom, and hydrolysis of the resulting Grignard adduct. Benzothioxanthenone derivatives of the second general formula above are prepared by heating a naphthylthiobenzoic acid derivative of the general formula in the presence of a dehydrating agent of the polyphosphoric acid type. 5 - Chloro - 2 - (1 - or 2 - naphthylthio) benzoic acid is prepared by treatment of 5-chloroanthranilic acid with nitrous acid, followed by potassium iodide, and reaction of the resulting 2-iodo-5- chlorobenzoic acid withα- or #-naphthalenethiol, respectively. |
