Product expiry date monitoring procedure uses additional bar code that is read at check-out and causes a signal to be emitted if product is out of date

The procedure consists of applying a second bar code (13) to a product (10) with a use-by date in addition to the normal bar code (11). The second bar code is read by a check-out scanner (4), and the data goes to a processor (6) which delivers a warning signal to an emitter (14) if the expiry date has been reached or passed. The second bar code can be printed on an adhesive label applied next to the normal identification bar code so the two can be read together.
