An apparatus and a method for controlling a speaker system are provided to supply the optimum sound to the listener by changing the speaker output of the 5.1 channel according to the position of the user. An apparatus for controlling a speaker system includes a memory(203), a display unit(209) and a microcomputer(202). The memory(203) stores the output value of each speaker by each position of the users. The display unit(209) displays the output values of each speaker stored at the memory(203) in response to the request command of the user with a predetermined type. And, the microcomputer(202) outputs the control signal to the sound processor(206) to output the corresponding output value from the memory(203) as a corresponding condition when the position of the user is selected with reference to the output value of each speaker by the positions of the users to be displayed through the display unit(209).
