<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To unify the brightness of image data to be obtained by a plurality of cameras. <P>SOLUTION: The image of a part of a printed matter is picked up so as to be overlapped by a plurality of cameras. A region whose luminance change is small in the overlap image data is decided as a region for calculating a mean luminance value (steps 14 to 16). As for each of the overlap image data to be obtained from a plurality of cameras, mean luminance values t<SB>i</SB>, t<SB>i+1</SB>of the decided region are calculated (steps 17, 18).
