PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a barrier element in which a fine barrier pattern with excellent accuracy of dimension is formed by using a conventional process for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device, and in which no picture is deteriorated by gradation and which performs displays by switching between two-dimensional and three-dimensional pictures, and also to obtain a three-dimensional image display device equipped with the barrier element. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 11 is formed in a light shielding part and a translucent resin layer 12 as a translucent transmissive layer with a nearly isotropic refractive index is formed on a transmissive part from regions of at least two or more kinds of film thickness values. Also a gap of the liquid crystal layer 11 of the barrier element is uniformly maintained by the maximum thickness region 112H of the translucent resin layer 12 as a spacer to maintain a gap between a base plate and a top plate of the liquid crystal layer 11 constant.
