摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly switch a gas circulation path from each cylinder independent state into a two cylinder connection state while preventing reduction in emission performance and occurrence of torque shock at the switching transient time. SOLUTION: This controller for the spark ignition type engine is provided with an operation mode control means ECU30 for controlling a usual operation mode in each cylinder independent state and controlling a special operation mode in the two cylinder connection state in which preceding cylinders 2A, 2D are connected with following cylinders 2B, 2C. When switching the gas circulation path from each cylinder independent state in the usual operation mode into the two cylinder connection state in the special operation mode, whether operation is shifted to an operation region in the fuel cut mode during a period of time set in advance or not is determined. When it is determined that operation is shifted to the operation region in the fuel cut mode during the period of time, the gas circulation path is switched at the time. When it is determined that operation is not shifted to the operation region in the fuel cut mode during the period of time, the gas circulation path is switched via a transient operation mode for burning fuel in only the following cylinders.
